Advanced Communication System (ACS)

The Advanced Communication System (ACS) is a new radio system and an automatic vehicle locator (AVL) system with computer-aided dispatch (CAD) for the fixed-route bus fleet.

It is expected, based on other transit agency experiences, that the ACS, now dubbed “The Navigator” will improve the efficiency, safety, and reliability of fixed-route bus operations.   In particular, The Navigator will:

-provide real-time location data, including comparison to scheduled location(s) which will improve service management;

-provide additional performance data for improved planning and scheduling;

-facilitate accurate and efficient statistical reporting that is federally mandated;

-improve response time and support during emergency situations;

-monitor engine performance for more effective preventative maintenance

-improve the overall reliability and image of HRT’s bus service

-provide the capability to integrate bus service with fixed guideway operations, such as light rail.

Some important benefits expected from the system for HRT’s customers include automated next stop announcements (auditory and visual), improved schedule adherence, improved emergency response time, and accessibility to real-time bus location information by HRT’s customer service representatives when responding to customer inquiries.   In addition, The Navigator will provide the data and communications infrastructure necessary to provide next bus arrival information at bus stop locations.  Although these signs were not in the original project scope, the cost savings realized during the final design process may be available to partially support this initiative.
